Rhubarb isn't just for sticking in the sugar jar
I have rediscovered the joy of eating Sugar Babies. It is a good thing — temporarily. But I’m wondering, what ever happened to the Sugar Mama? The Sugar Daddy is still around, pulling out fillings willy-nilly, but the Sugar Mama, all slick and coated with chocolate, is gone from the shelves. It probably has been for a long time.
I miss you, Sugar Mama.
The Sugar Daddy is lovely — sweet, caramely, sticky and long-lasting. But who really wants to eat something that may come out of your mouth with a tooth sticking out of it?
I’m not sure where I was, probably the dollar store, and I bought a box of Sugar Babies. Oh, man. They are so good. And they are chewy and sticky, too, but not as hard-core as the Sugar Daddy.
Soon I’ll grow tired of the brown sugar treats and figure out a way to use them in my cooking. They’d be great on top of peaks of frosting on a cake. I could spell out “Happy Birthday” with them. A shoefly pie is plenty sweet but I could push it right over the edge with Sugar Babies on top. Maybe they could go in a pot of baked beans. Let’s face it, we make them with brown sugar, molasses, maple syrup — it’s not much of a stretch.
I’ll get back to you on the results.

Back on Belmont Avenue when I was a kid, we would pick rhubarb and stick it in a bowl of sugar and eat it. Because on its own it is very tart and stringy, rhubarb is one of those vegetables that needs to be countered with sweetness.
Most of us know about strawberry rhubarb pie, and I like that just fine, but the following two recipes are a step above that pie. Trust me.
The first recipe is Baked Chicken with Rhubarb Sauce. I’m a big fan of chicken and fruit sauce — apricot, orange, cranberry — and this is comparable. It’s an easy dish and the rhubarb is mixed with some sugar to keep its tartness at a minimum. Serve it with rice or mashed potatoes. The leftovers are excellent.
The second is Rhubarb Coffee Cake, which is very moist and sweet with just the right touch of tartness from the rhubarb. There was a caramel sauce recipe that you could make to serve with it, but I never really knew why — the cake is delicious on its own. I brought this to an event over the weekend and it was gone very quickly.

Bowl of Cherries: Pie Sunday: Apple Shoo-fly Pie
Pie Sunday this week is thanks to my coworker. During a lull in customer flow, Brit and I were talking about my Pie Sundays and what I should do next. She asked me if I ever made Shoo-fly pie before. I said no and asked what it was. She said she had it when she was young and she had no idea, but it was the best pie she'd ever had. I had to make it! I went home and did some research. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe for a molasses pie. It's shoo-fly name comes from the molasses attracting flies that need to be shooed away. Well this sounded great, but an entire pie with molasses filling sounded a bit too heavy for me. I found this recipe and decided to tweak it. The filling didn't fill the crust all the way and some of the spices weren't to my liking.
