Thumbs Up for UVic
As growing up in a large metropolitan city, I don't drive (at least not yet) and very used to taking advantage of mass public transportation. HK has an area slightly less then 1100 sq km and yet is inhibited by 6.7 million people. Therefore, a well designed and maintained public transportation system is essential. It has double decker bus, ferry, mini bus, train, tram, subway ... ... etc and they run 24/7/365. I only needed 6.6 planet if I lived in HK and 13.7 planet if I lived in Victoria. What a huge difference? See, I can't really recycle well here. There is no blue boxes or separate garbage bins for different types of garbage at my apartment. Grocery stores here do not take the pop cans and liquor stores do not take the bottles, you pretty much have to go to the bottle depot if you want to recycle them and of course, the depot is not on a bus route. I mean, if it is not convenient, people are not going to recycle. And don't get me started on the transit system here, most of the bus stop running after 6PM. Biscally, the services become reduced after 6PM, on the weekends and when University and highschools are not in session. I walked to work most of the mornings and sometimes back to home as well, I am often the only person on the street walking (a lot of my coworkers think walking 1 hr and 10 minutes to work is insane btw). I rarely even run into people walking their dogs or jogging. The University here proposed a plan similar to the UPass at UVic and the students voted it down! :( It is basically a vicious circle, bad transit services lead to low ridership and low ridership further damaged the transit services.
