Malaysia's drought in Canon Cup continues

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia again failed to regain the coveted Canon Cup as they fell to a 2-3 defeat by the Rest of the World at the Sunway Megalanes in Sunway Pyramid yesterday.

The mixed team bowling series, held in conjunction with the Malaysian Open championships, saw Malaysia winning the inaugural edition in 2008 but have since then ended up as the losers.

In the matchplay format tournament yesterday, Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan was unable to get the ball rolling for Malaysia to get off to a winning start – losing 151-170 to China’s Wang Zhiyoung.

Sin Li Jane pulled Malaysia level after beating Lara Posadas of the Philippines by a mere pin, 176-175.

However, national youth bowler Chong Jun Foo failed to keep up the winning momentum, losing 187-195 to Kuwait’s Khalid Al-Dubyyan.

With Malaysia trailing 1-2, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, who was crowned as the Malaysia Open women’s champion the previous day, had to win the match against Kelly Kulick of the United States to keep alive Malaysia’s hopes to win the Cup.

But the American won 205-177 to clinch the tie for the Rest of the World.

“I was beaten badly by Zandra last year (163-211). So I guess, I finally got my revenge,” said Kulick, who was beaten 163-211 last year.

“But as far as winning is concerned, I would trade my win today with the Malaysian Open title because that is more of a personal success while this is a collective effort.”

In a dead match, Muhd Nur Aiman took to the lanes against Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat.

Aiman reproduced the gutsy performance that won him a first Malaysian Open title the previous day to salvage some pride for Malaysia. He won the match 200-174.

“We have already lost the tie but my team-mates urged me to just play the game and luck was on my side,” said Aiman.

It was his second win over Yannaphon over the weekend as he also beat the Thai to the Malaysian Open men’s Masters final on Saturday.

I think it all started when I found a golf ball in our front yard. I brought it in the house and asked Pat why a golf ball would be found way out here in the desert. He informed me that our neighbor had made a golf ball canon and he thought it was pretty neat.

The next thing I knew Pat was looking for a bowling ball. I had not paid any attention to what his latest project in the shop was so I was thinking he was making another barbeque grill or a walking stick. But off to Casa Grande he went and came home with two bowling balls and a piece of scrap iron. I’m afraid to ask what the barrel is made of.

Then Sunday he asked me if I would like to drive out to the dry lake bed south of us and I said I didn’t think so even though he told me he was going to test his bowling ball canon. Well, I missed the big test. He came home telling me the bowling ball went at least 1500 feet. He had called enough neighbors to come out and have a real event, all with their own toys and I heard they all had a ball, so to speak.

I teased him and suggested he paint the canon red, white and blue and by golly he did. Then he went to Michaels and got some stars to stencil on it. We’ve really had some laughs but the last thing I said to him last night was, “By the way, where do you have the can of black powder stored?” He replied, “In the shop.” Not what I wanted to hear.
