Emmetsburg School Board Approves Staff Changes And Student Trips

Staff changes and student trips were topics of discussion during the June 20, meeting of the Emmetsburg Community Schools Board of Education. A quorum of the board was on hand to conduct the monthly meeting with board members Don Hagen, Karla Anderson, and Tammy Naig absent.

Board members approved a resignation submitted by high school secretary Joann Herbers. The board extended their appreciation to Herbers for her 24 years of service to the school district.

The board also approved changing Mitch Mueller's title from "technology assistant" to "systems administrator" for the district with an annual salary of $33,000.

"Last year, Mr. Mueller was paid $14 per hour, and with a lot of over-time, made over $32,000 for the calendar year," shared Superintendent John Joynt. "This would give him a salary to be in charge of running the servers and connections with a $750 increase in pay."

Principal Jay Jurrens informed the board that the search to fill two vacancies-the middle school special education instructor and assistant principal positions-was underway.

Five individuals had been interviewed for the special education position, and the position was offered to a female candidate who declined the offer.

"Why did she decline?" asked Laure Egland, board member.

"She didn't feel that it was the place or level for her," Jurrens said. "She had more of an elementary background."

Nineteen applicants (16 male and three female) have applied for the assistant principal position. Jurrens plans to interview the top four candidates next week. Board members were invited to question the candidates following the interviews, as well.

Student trips for music and cheerleading were also presented to the board.

"The music department [vocal and band] is seeking permission to begin sharing with students and parents the idea of a music trip next spring, Apr. 25 through Apr. 30," said Jurrens. "Students would miss two days of school. Two possibilities are being considered: Branson, Missouri, and Denver, Colorado. We've been to Colorado before, but never Branson."

The Branson trip would offer Emmetsburg music students the chance to participate in a clinic with a group of professional performers from Branson. The students would then perform as the opening act at an evening show. A trip to Branson would also offer opportunities to visit several museums, Silver Dollar City amusement park, and dinner and show venues, as well as perform at St. Agnes Cathedral. The cost is $674 per student.

Rossini   L’Italiana in Algeri, Overture

Hummel   Trumpet Concerto, featuring John King, trumpet

Mendelssohn   Symphony No. 3, Scottish

Concert 1: First Congregational Church, Boulder

Concert 2: Broomfield Auditorium

This is a very good series of programs. The title of the entire season is “Road to Mastery.” And indeed, even though several of the pieces could be included in the last program, which is entitled Mastery Here are three works which are truly “revered” because they are absolute masterworks.

Lindsay Deutsch, a young violinist who has taken the United States by storm will be the featured artist for the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto on the first program of the season. Ms. Deutch received her Bachelor’s Degree, and continues to study at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where she studies with Robert Lipsett. She has performed with orchestras throughout the United Statesand Canada, in addition to performing the violin soundtrack for the 2006 movie, The Good Shepherd .

In addition to her many awards and concert credits, she and her sister, Lauren, have co-founded a non-profit organization, Classics Alive (www.ClassicsAlive.org), dedicated to building classical music audiences. I think this is a fantastic idea that more young musicians who are on the concert stage need to become involved with.

Another young American artist will perform with the Boulder Chamber Orchestra this coming season. She is Claire Huangci of Rochester,New York, and she will perform the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto Nr. 2.

Born in 1990, Claire became a student of Eleanor Sokoloff, a piano professor of the Curtis Institute of Music. In 2003, she was formally accepted by the Curtis Institute with a full scholarship from the Hirsig Family Foundation and continued her piano study under Eleanor Sokoloff and Gary Graffman. From there, she went on to win the Philadelphia Orchestra Competition and performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Wolfgang Sawalisch, one of dozens of American orchestras she has appeared with. Several of her performances were aired on music radio stations in 2006 and 2007. In May 2007, Curtis Director Gary Graffman honoured her with the Most Promising Student Award. She is continuing her work with Professor Arie Vardi in Germany at the Hanover Hochschule für Musik as she continues to perform throughoutEurope.
