ANIMALS AND MEN

Minimalist Brit-punkers Animals and Men have been at it for a long time, coming up in the late '70s and continuing in a trail-blazing fashion through the '80s, surviving the bloat of the '90s and emerging as DIY godfathers in the present age. Throughout that time, Animals and Men have maintained a no-frills approach to punk: a simple hook, a deadpan female vocal and sneering lyrics. Its purity is its greatest asset. And now that all this time has passed, the band only gained integrity in the way their music has come back around to fire spitballs at all of the young posers who yearn to capture that early punk aesthetic. Animals and Men are the real deal, and it'd be a shame to miss them as they veer through our humble midst. - Rev. Adam McKinney

A couple weeks back I spewed praise for the long-awaited comeback of Tacoma band Argonaut. I've liked Argonaut, led by singer-bassist Matt Sader, since way back in my Tacoma Reporter days, so it wasn't hard to do. Meant every word of it. The problem arose when the band didn't end up playing the show I spoke of - a poker tournament at Hell's Kitchen. Oopsy-daisy! This week, there's no chance in hell Argonaut will miss the opportunity to throw down with Tacoma's most intimate arena-rock band, Big Wheel Stunt Show, and last year's Weekly Volcano Best of Tacoma "Best Metal Band" winner, Mahnhammer. This show has awesome written all over it.

As though this weren't enough of an exciting show already Weezer returned with a three- song-encore topped off with all four members of the band crowding around the drum kit and beating the hell out of it. I could feel the blast of air coming from the

Then burn rubber getting the hell out of there. If you're in a band or a satanic cult, this could be the ride for you; its lockable and commodious cargo area being perfect for either massive drum kit or Rubenesque virgin transport.
There were no drugs, no fights, hell; there was hardly any nudity. In its place, a more matured heavy metal band with a kick-ass set list. Of course, Tommy Lee still acts like a corrupted child, but that might explain his awesome drum contraptions.
