The Abbott House, founded in 1939, is a private charity that provides residential treatment services to girls ages 7 and 17. It offers intensive treatment and foster care in a therapeutic home.

As one of the Abbott House girls wrote, "Salt is a preservative, and to preserve something is to help/save/bring back ... We can all be salt. For our self or for others. Just because some pretty crapy (sic) things have happened in our lives doesn't mean we aren't wonderful in our own ways."
Katlyn agrees. She completed her second stay at Abbott House about four weeks after the work on Salt began. She had begun to refuse to attend school and wouldn't listen to the adults around her. Now, she says, she understands how much further a person can get when permission is requested and how better communication skills can smooth a path.
Katlyn, who had refused to attend her high school speech class, now has spoken to large groups and addressed the crowd at Wednesday's unveiling ceremony for Salt.
"I think all of that together has caused her to see herself a little differently and given her actually some confidence," says Katlyn's mother, Robin Skinner.
