Pet Care: Baths, Bling, and the 'Budget Special'

Pets - those loveable, often furry friends - are wonderful companions and fantastic stress-reducers. Their unconditional friendship makes them wonderful additions to any household. However, as the owner of two Miniature Schnauzers, I can attest that no matter how affectionate they are pets often create a giant, money-sucking whirlpool in the midst of their owners' bank accounts.

Now, before any animal lovers take offense, let me explain myself. I am very fond of my two long-haired pups and do not neglect to spend money on such vital items as wormer, deflea, and vaccinations. As a matter of fact, my husband and I once forfeited an entire anniversary trip in order to fund one of our dog's emergency vet bills. (Of course, the fact that this emergency was the direct result of our dog ripping open the trash and eating something very old and very nasty did not serve to endear her to me.)

So, yes, I fork over the cash when necessities arise. However, it often seems that the majority of money spent on pets is for the completely unnecessary items...things like haircuts, clothes, and professional baths.

My general philosophy in regards to these luxuries is that if I do not do it for myself, I am certainly not doing it for my pet. Take professional baths, for example. I have never been full-body bathed by an expert wielding Hawaiian Tropical shampoo, so why should my dogs get that privilege? If a free shower at home with drugstore shampoo is good enough for me, it should also be sufficient for my dogs.

The same rule applies to haircuts. As the thrifty German that I am, I visit the salon 2 or 3 times a year for a trim. Therefore, when my Schnauzers find themselves in need of a cut (which long-haired breeds often do), they are treated to what I fondly call the 'Budget Special'. This involves me, a pair of scissors, and a towel, and I must say it is satisfyingly efficient. My dogs may look a tad uneven for a few weeks, but they are cool and untangled, and I have discovered that they do not cower in embarrassment if their fur is not cut in the traditional 'Schnauzer' style.

Now we arrive at the controversial topic of pet clothes. Frankly, I fail to see the point of clothing an animal that does, after all, come with built-in fur - except for those hairless breeds...in their cases I would be tempted to at least buy them shirts.

An average pet, though, generally does not require clothing or any form of bling. In fact, I am relatively certain that if animals can survive in the great outdoors sans a bejeweled T-shirt and a pink, rhinestone necklace, then they can most likely manage without those items in an air-conditioned home.
