High Profile Crime Unit Studies?

Recently, Education World, released a unit study focusing on the Casey Anthony case for high school students. The unit study is free and under a section called Media Literacy and High Profile Crime Cases. To be sure this will not be the last high profile crime used in a lesson plan. I find this type of lesson plan distasteful. What can a child, even of high school age, learn from a criminal? Feeding a curiosity about murder is not education nor does it teach critical thinking as the lesson claims.
The lesson plan focuses on the Casey Anthony case. Through that case media coverage, sensationalism, and the differences in types of media used to cover a case. The concepts are not inappropriate. The manner in which it will be taught is inappropriate. Why should the Casey Anthony case further be sensationalized by making lesson plans for high schoolers about it? Why should Casey Anthony be given more fame, notoriety, and discussion? The lessons of media can easily be taught without highlighting murder. While I understand using a real world example to bring home the point, I think we have lost a d respect for victims of crimes. A student could easily study media by focusing on media coverage in general giving specific examples as opposed to using a criminal case a hook to grab the attention of students and teachers.
To back track a bit here are the student learning objectives: (copied directly from the site of the lesson plan which you can find HERE .)
Students gain "media literacy" skills-thinking critically, evaluating and analyzing news and information, and drawing one's own conclusions.
I have no issue with the student learning objectives. In fact, it sounds like a class I would love to teach. I am opposed to using a current murder case as the focal point instead of a simple discussion question. I think some are trying too hard to "sell" education to students rather than educate students.
