Figures from the world of motoring
Eight minutes 08 seconds – the laptime set by the new limited-edition Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy at Nürburgring’s famous Nordschleife circuit, which set a new benchmark time for a production-specification front-wheel drive car and beat the attempts of several far more powerful, rear-wheel drive cars.
Renault Sport says it demonstrated that a showroom-specification, front-wheel drive car could beat high-performance models from some elite specialist brands and tuners. The Renaultsport 265 Trophy, named after its output in horspower (equivalent to 195kW), was quicker than cars such as the Ferrari 360 Modena (8min09), Lamborghini Diablo SV (8min09) and Dodge Viper GTS (8min10). Impressive stuff.
Three million – the number of Toyota hybrid vehicles that have been sold worldwide. Since the launch of the Toyota Coaster Hybrid EV coach in August 1997 and the introduction of the first-generation Prius – the first mass-produced hybrid – in December the same year, Toyota has propelled hybrid technology from automotive niche towards the mainstream.
Toyota currently sells 16 hybrid models in around 80 countries, and will introduce ten new hybrids in world markets by the end of 2012. The carmaker reckons its hybrid sales have cut C02 emissions by 18 million tons compared to emissions produced by petrol-powered vehicles of comparable size and performance.
288 000 – the number of people employed by the South African motor industry, 33 000 of them at the seven vehicle manufacturing plants and 250 000 employed by vehicle importers, component manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers and service providers.
The retail motoring sector itself is made up of 14 000 employers.
300 000 – the number of current-generation BMW 3 Series sedans that have been produced at BMW South Africa’s manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria.
This exceeds the production totals of the two previous generations of BMW 3 Series built in South Africa. The third generation BMW 3 Series sedan, produced between 1990 and 1998, enjoyed a production run of 92 589 units while its successor totalled 269 810 units between 1998 and 2005.
More than 80 percent of 3 Series sedans built in Rosslyn are shipped to export markets such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines and Korea.
