Memjet Office Printer

Memjet unveiled its page-per-second printing technology in 2007 at the Global Ink Jet Printing Conference, creating lots of excitement. Since then, the company has been working with an assortment of partners to put the technology into desktop printers, with a model from Lenovo already launched in China, one from Lomond slated for this summer in Russia, and one from Medion announced for later this year in Germany. No Memjet Office Printer models have been announced for the U.S. yet, but Memjet says they're on the way, and will likely cost $500 to $600. I had the chance to test one, and can vouch for how impressive it is.

The promise for Memjet printers is high speed at a low price. The printer combines a printhead that's wide enough to print the entire width of the page at once using 70,400 nozzles, a driver chip that can calculate the firing of 900 million drops per second, and ink that's designed to dry fast on the page but not clog the nozzles. The technology is obviously intriguing, but that doesn't count for much if you can't buy a printer that has it. It's important to realize that Memjet isn't in the business of selling printers. Rather, it sells its technology, in the form of components, to companies that design, build, and sell printers. The model that Memjet sent me was purposely missing any identifying details that might indicate the OEM. Much as with Xerox's solid ink printers, Memjet printers are best categorized as laser class—both because they're page printers like lasers, which means they rasterize and print an entire page at time, instead of one line at a time like standard inkjets, and because their speed puts them in competition with lasers.

You'll probably be seeing similar printers from more than one printer manufacturer, with each one based on the same Memjet reference model, possibly with variations. Something similar happened with the first two generations of monohrome laser desktop printers which, for a time, were virtually all based on the same Canon engines. Coincidentally, the Memjet printer's size and shape is reminiscent of lasers based on the second-generation version of that engine, including, for example, the venerable HP LaserJet II.

Size and Setup
The printer measures 8.6 by 16.5 by 21.7 inches (HWD), making it small enough to share a desk with, but a little larger than you may be comfortable with. At 26.5 pounds, it's light enough for one person to move around easily, which is a help for a small or home office. Much like most laser printers, it offers a 250-sheet paper drawer in the front, and the output tray on top. It also has a straight-through paper path, with a manual-feed slot in the back, which will let you feed different paper stock without having to swap out the paper in the tray, as well as feed heavy-weight paper at up to 75-pound weight.
