Kerry tells Mass. Maritime grads to make their voices heard
The rain went away, the haze faded and the sun came out Saturday morning as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Class of 2011 took their diplomas and sailed out into new oceans, new frontiers and new challenges in a world where technology and communications are breaking down borders and barriers.
U.S. Senator John Kerry, D-MA, told the gathering of graduates, parents and friends that MMA is a step closer to securing a Naval Reserve Officer Training Program on the Taylors Point campus.
Kerry was at times in his address funny, humble and determined, telling the graduates to make sure their voices are heard so that America can resume leadership roles in the 21st century in terms of finance, security, technology, infrastructure upgrades and achievement.
“Look at how we did all this before,” Kerry said, mentioning the point that 65 percent of the solar-technology manufacturing is done in China now, based on research at the Bell Labs in this country.
One cadet in his dress whites marched into the MMA parade field next to the training ship Kennedy, hoisting a Boston Bruins’ Stanley Cup banner.
“Go Bruins,” duly noted Capt. Bradley Lima, academy academic dean and master of ceremonies.
Kerry followed suit. “There are a million people up Boston, honoring the Bruins and you’re stuck here with John Kerry,” he said. “But this is an incredible place to go to school; this is a great site for any sailor’s eyes.”
Many graduates have secured jobs. Some are still looking but remain confident about employment at great pay rates.
Marilyn Morris of Monument Beach watched her granddaughter, Meredith M. Hall of Duxbury, receive her diploma. Hall is going to work in emergency management at Jet Blue’s corporate airline offices in Queens, N.Y.
Graduate Brian Maniglia of New Jersey, an MMA cross-country team member, is still job-hunting. He wants to work as a pilot along the Intra-Coastal Waterway in the Delaware area. His mother, Sue Maniglia, said her son is confident about his job prospects.
Admiral Richard Gurnon welcomed the crowd. “Father’s Day may be great, but no more tuition payments is priceless,” he deadpanned to cheers and applause.
Gurnon told the graduates they will “soon set sail for distant harbors” and enter “an unsettled world.”
Celebrated sword boat skipper Linda Greenlaw of Maine, “the woman who survived the Perfect Storm of 1991” charged the graduates with valuing their education, citing Shakespeare’s sonnet “The Hungry Ocean.
