New chief executive sees diversity as key for Winnebago

Randy Potts, Winnebago Industries' new chief executive officer, says he will continue to look for ways to diversify the Forest City RV manufacturer as the recovery struggles to gain footing.

Potts was named Winnebago's president in January and was elected CEO by the board Wednesday.

Bob Olson, Winnebago's CEO since 2008, retains his position as board chairman. Olson, 59, will "focus on the company's overall direction."

Potts said it's no secret the company has been disappointed with the economy's recovery.

Winnebago has added workers - both by recalling laid-off workers and by hiring new employees - but employment is still about half of its pre-recession high of 4,000.

Motor home manufacturers that survived the recession are trying to gauge what the market will be for RVs.

"That's the question that's been out there: When will this market return to what we've called normal ... or is this the new normal?" said Potts, who added that the industry has gone from selling about 50,000 motor homes a year to 25,000 to 27,000 units.

"Whether it is or isn't ... we have to have a renewed emphasis in making sure our business model is optimized as best as we can for the market," he said, adding that the company has a history of moving cautiously. "Nothing is going to change abruptly."

Potts, who joined Winnebago in 1983 as a senior tool designer, has served in various engineering and management positions since then. In 2009, he became senior vice president of strategic planning and was responsible for new business development.

Potts, a graduate of Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, served as Winnebago's vice president of manufacturing from 2006 to 2009.
