MFNW: Get Yo' Ass Here Next Year!
Years ago someone in Portland, OR came up with the idea of trying to imitate the dynamics and success of our country's premier festival of the music industry, Austin, TX South by Southwest (SXSW ). Being intelligent, but not subtle, they called the new music festival North by Northwest. Years later, and for some reason, this name has come and gone. Instead of the city of Portland is now the host of an annual event called Musicfest NW (MFNW). This year I had the privilege of attending for the first time and the opportunity to experience a little of what it is.MFNW is five days of concerts, especially at night, in locations distributed around Portland. In addition, there are many industry events, free shows, festivals, live radio shows and others that are worth the effort to discover and participate if you can. Some of the artists this year were Sebedoh, Iron & Wine, Explosions in the Sky, Archers Of Loaf, Band of Horses, The Horrors, The Kills, Phantogram, Ted Leo, Brand New, Olivia Tremor Control, and the list goes on. .. The biggest problem with MFNW is a good thing to have, I suppose. There's just too much cool stuff is happening all at once.Friday night and Saturday for example, every hour on the hour, there were sometimes up to six shows I would have liked to have seen! Having to decide where to go and was often seen hard times, ultimately leading to frustration and put a damper on my experience. Without access to self-duplication machines, however, I finally gave in to bands disappeared, and went with the flow as best I could. Do not be too afraid to do as much as possible seemed to favor an overall fun, and ultimately made me the most of my time in Portland. The first night, there were really only three places to choose from. I chose the bunk Bar, where an old friend and former Chico citizen Kelly Blair Bauman was making new songs with a full band. I'm sorry to say the other bands that I saw was not very memorable ... The noise at was not the best, but it was a good show, and one of the most popular throughout the entire weekend. Thursday night, the shows I wanted to see were too scattered. I took a few deep breaths and just chose to stay downtown, beginning my evening with a free event to non MFNW Al Den in the cellar of the Hotel Crystal. In residence for the week was Mike Coykendall, a great musician (and work visits and M Ward She and Him) and super nice guy who asked people to achieve different with him every night of the week. Guests that night were the local group and light above the Old Kelly Bauman. The room was cozy and traditional, and musicians all very qualified. And as he began a full hour before the show MFNW, I do not miss practice what the festival had to offer! Began earlier Friday with a show at the center of the Dr Marten retail store where I saw and heard Ted Leo for the first time.I liked his songs and I loved his style of guitar playing. He seemed very English, Scottish or even for me, and because of that I faced after the show and accused him of not really being of New Jersey, to which he confessed that he was Irish blood . This could also explain his mid-show reference to U2's "New Year" video, and he expressed surprise to discover that most of the crowd filled with young people had no idea what it spoke. But the most important that day I learned, because he said it many times, it is strongly in favor of (and is now supported by) Dr.Marten shoes vegan news. This is important because I did not know shoes came to this taste, and now agree with Mr. Leo if you think you might one day stuck having to eat your shoes (a fear each musician on tour lives inevitably) , vegan is obviously the way go.Friday was also great because I was able to see my new favorite Live Act, see you Oh. They played the Star Theatre, a recently renovated. The guy next to me jumped on stage at the beginning and did a stage dive. The public was still moving, and there was almost always someone from the crowd riding on top of fingers.Despite my position at the front, which allowed me to attend the singer with guitar chords tangled (ie a constant throughout his performance delusional), I kept worrying the shift coming in my direction public may be cracked my ribs against the stadium. Or worse, I might actually wet my pants I joked about having done so when I saw the day before Seattle. So I excused myself to the bathroom and enjoyed the rest of the show from the balcony. It's hard for me to imagine that someone sees you deliberately missing after Oh captivated by their live sound.Race there at the end of their set, I could stop by a few small clubs to see some bands random, some interesting, some sad, on the way back to The Show one day when the Athens, GA band Olivia Tremor Control, the famous "Elephant 6 collective," were next to perform. They have a great sound, but just caught my attention, after what I had experienced. Fortunately, I remembered that there was another place a few blocks away with a group who had traveled several miles to reach Portland. They are not original by any stretch of imagination.Dressed in black or black and white, all with black hair long hair, they serve a great keyboard-heavy sound reminiscent of the 1980s. Their performance and their music really called the feeling of a bygone era, and I felt wonderfully transported to another time and space (Mighty Boosh reference for those who know ...!) For every bit of their set j 'I witnessed. Saturday was my "big show" days. Despite my wrist band pass for the festival, the brains behind MFNW shows arranged three separate pavilion in Pioneer Square in downtown, which is separate tickets. My time has allowed me to choose one so I took Saturday.I missed the first group, however, because I attended a party off-the-box grid free Cravedog hosted by a company that claims to be "a best friend bands." They make CD , DVDs and assorted printing does for artists. The sound at this stage in the open air was really strong, and the bass is enough to make you nausea at times. But I liked the photo to the grave front, where I could meet and discuss with others covering the festival. I met a really nice guy from Oregon Public Broadcasting, and assured him that I would cover the next band, the woods, for readers the house. So there it is, my official review: Their show was a force to reckon with. They clearly are traveling with their own lighting guy because the lights were too perfectly synchronized with the music have been anything but carefully prepared. And the sound of the speakers was the epic rock and roll. I challenge anyone who does not like their records to see them live. What I heard is the essence of what the drums, bass and some electric guitars have everything! Because the show started at the beginning there was much going on that night. After my share of Explosions I head for the Crystal Ballroom for some of the Black Prairie (bad), then descended down into the lair of Al for another taste of last night, Mike Coykendall music free (awesome). I then found my car on one of Portland through the streets, after a frantic search surely thought he had been towed, and headed across the river at a place called Rontom and the Doug Fir . I saw a large group that I had never heard of, Finn Riggins, and got a few moments of pleasure out of Loch Lomond together. But the thrill of the night was found Thee Oh Sees were about to play in an underground black hole called The East End (they told me after I found the smoke in the parking lot of a mini- Mart). MFNW so I jumped the conclusion shows that night and paid an entrance fee to see them again. Then the band stopped to tell me (as I schlepped their equipment and generally fawned over them) I had to see the band about to play called OFF!. With a former member of Black Flag, they were the real deal, they said. The sound terrible to me, I fear, and I could not make it through a song.So after a quick farewell or two of life and a smile lifting Brigid, I returned to my crash pad and a good night sleep. Sunday was the final day of MFNW, and there was only one official show at the downtown Pioneer Square, which required a separate ticket. Fortunately, I was informed of a show every day for free Rontom. I was surprised and delighted to see a young musician of Redding, California on the bill: Wesley Jensen! Now add "and the Wildcats" to his band name, I made sure I did not miss it.He has done a commendable job, pleasing the crowd and later told me that he and the band had come all the way to Redding for only showing at the invitation of the host of the show and the sponsor Music Marmoset, a company specializing in music licensing. All bands at the festival were enjoyable, pancake breakfast in particular, but my hands down favorite was Dolorean. I love all their records and no one had seen him once, long ago, before I knew their songs.Their music is essentially the voice of a man, Al-Jacques, pictured here Livin 'Large (with the bottle of syrup homeopathic throat, or so he said, sitting on his amp, which sucks throughout the show) . Archie Bunker his presence, and confused rock star attitude, I could totally dig. He reminds me a bit of Aaron Neville, with his sweet songs that are not quite match the image we see. I was really impressed with his ability to rage on songs that have a soft touch on issues without ringing false. As shown in the past that I attended was a wonderful conclusion of the week.Hammocks, Stands, Chairs, Hanging in Rope, Cotton, Nylon
