John Deere began building farm machinery in 1837 through the invention of the cast-steel plow designed to replace the wood and iron versions. John Deere launched into the field-tractor industry with the purchase in 1918 of The Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company, builders of Waterloo Boy Tractor.
The Fuller & Johnson engine also will be highlighted. This company began building horse-drawn implements under the name Billing & Carmen in 1840. Its first engine was manufactured in 1902, an oil-cooled model. The firm's most popular model was the air-cooled farm pump engine first built in 1909. Over the years, Fuller & Johnson built 57,000 air-cooled farm pump engines, ceasing operations in 1932.

It was a sea of green at the county fairgrounds—and not because of the grass.
The Crawford Antique Farm Machinery Association was holding its 11th annual Crawford Farm Show this past weekend at the county fairgrounds at 610 Whetstone St. in Bucyrus. Antique John Deere tractors were the featured brand, and dozens of Deere tractors lined the entry into the fairgrounds. Other makes of tractors and several other kinds of farm equipment were on display farther into the fairgrounds as well.
An antique tractor parade ran through downtown Bucyrus starting at 2 p.m., in conjunction with the farm show.
The farm show began Thursday. Steve Schafer, a trustee of the system as he walked the grounds midmorning Friday. He said more tractors would be coming in Friday afternoon and evening, so Saturday would see the most tractors of the three days.
The farm equipment is all brought in by local farm aficionados, from North Robinson, Bucyrus, New Washington and as far away as Newark. The public was invited to the farm show to enjoy seeing all the tractors, talking to other farm fans and visiting the vendors selling items such as crafts and fair food.
June 18 was Family Day and the last day of the farm show.
