Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby's personal finances slim down
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Richard Shelby's personal financial portfolio, while still sizable, has slimmed down in recent years, with fewer investments in the stock market, no liabilities, and the transfer of real estate assets to his family's trust.
In addition to his $174,000 Senate salary, Shelby, R-Ala., still collects between $100,000 and $1 million a year from his interest in Tuscaloosa Title Co., which he founded and has remained chairman of since 1974. But gone is the rent he used to collect from a Tuscaloosa apartment complex he developed, which had earned him somewhere between $100,000 and $1 million annually. Ownership of the complex was largely given to his heirs, leaving him a 2 percent share. And the mortgage on that complex -- which was more than $1 million but less than $5 million -- is no longer his liability.
U.S. senators must disclose their personal financial information annually, but the documents require only ranges, not exact amounts of most transactions and values. Shelby's latest report covers 2010, and shows the senator is not as active in owning stocks and bonds or developing real estate as he once was.
He and his wife jointly own two homes worth more than $1 million each, in Washington D.C. and Tuscaloosa. And Shelby still collects rent of between $50,000 and $100,000 on an office building in Tuscaloosa, according to his latest disclosure. Other than a money market and a credit union account worth less than $50,000 each, the remainder of the financial investments Shelby reported are owned by his wife, Annette, a retired professor at Georgetown University.
As in years past, Annette Shelby's holdings include stocks, bonds, certificates of deposits and retirement accounts. Her Wells Fargo stock, worth between $50,000 and $100,000, was given to their two sons. And several bond accounts were inherited after the death of her mother last year.
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., was given an extension to file his 2010 report. His 2009 report also was filed late last year because the estates of his mother and aunt still were in probate. That report shows Sessions inherited real estate and investments after their deaths.
Real estate he once owned partially he now owns outright, greatly increasing his net worth. Sessions now owns five properties in Wilcox and Choctaw counties with a total value of between $1.6 million and $6.25 million. He also inherited several stock and bond accounts worth between $173,000 and $525,000. Most of the other stock and bond assets listed on his report are owned by his wife, Mary.

(Mike Kittrell/Staff Photographer) As Baldwin's population grew by nearly 30 percent — again ranking it as the second-fastest growing county in Alabama — the number of people who rent their homes in the county skyrocketed by 72 percent since 2000.
Honestly, with the real estate market the way it is, and people who can't sell their homes trying to rent them out, I don't see that law lasting for too long. Money, (green power); always trumps ideaology (white, brown, or black power).
