Hidden Gems: The course by the river (video)
To get there is to take your motor vehicle on a hiking trip; to play it is to experience acres of forest, miniature greens and a serene view from its peak. The nine-hole, 60-acre course on the bluffs 80 feet above the Missouri River on the edge of Springfield known as Springfield Golf Club boasts itself as "Dakota's Pebble Beach." That distinction - a comparison to one of the most famous golf courses in the world - validates its place on the list of the Argus Leader's "Hidden Gems."
It has its quirks.
It all started in 1984 as a grassroots movement, the same year the University of South Dakota at Springfield closed and became a state prison. Community members volunteered and members of the National Guard carved out the course's infrastructure. Of photographs taken during formation of the course, many include farmer hats and work boots.
For less than $50,000, the course was complete, and on July 8, 1986, after posing for photographs, the first foursome of Bob Tjeerdsma, Norm Schelske, Leo Thompson and Stan Matson teed off on the 3,000-yard par 36.
The course's designer is known most specifically as "some guy from Sioux City." Hooked drives on the fifth tee will sail into the Missouri River 80 feet below. Do the same on the fourth hole, the ball will land on a resident's backyard.
On holes facing the Missouri River in the distance, the white-colored water looks more like a sea than a tributary.
But neither of those holes compare to hole three, a 190-yard par three from the farthest tee box. It dives rapidly downward, then rapidly upward in a reverse pyramid form onto a green less than 25 feet long and 35 feet wide. It plays 190 yards, but it looks like it's 230. Of the 36 holes-in-one in course history, only 13 have come from the third. "If you miss the green, you might score high," said Travis Stockholm, local pro at the course and a former state high school golf champion who knows what a difficult hole looks like. "Because chipping it onto that green is not easy."
The story goes that Stockholm, who said it's likely that no one has played the course more than himself, once carded a seven-under 29, a course record. Irish and two others witnessed the round and the 25-foot putt he needed to sink on the final hole to break 30. "It should have been a 28," Stockholm said. "But I hit every shot I needed to hit, I haven't been close to a 29 since."
The course has felt effects from the rising Missouri River despite its height above the water in most areas. A bridge running to the ninth hole by the second tee box has been closed off. If the water rises any higher, the irrigation pump coursing water throughout the course will need to be moved.
