Group brings voices of Civil War to Dells
The Dells claims General Joseph Bailey and the volunteers he recruited for the Civil War, but historian and author Michael Goc reminded a Dells audience that a third or more of his unit was made up of men from Adams County.
Goc and seven others from Adams-Friendship came to the Community Center in the Kilbourn Library Tuesday to bring alive some voices from the Civil War. Goc, author of "Hero of the Red River: The Life and Times of Joseph Bailey," said he relied on Bailey's letters in preparing the presentation as well as other letters from the period and newspaper articles.
Bailey's letters had been found by David Gussel in the former Stroud bank building when Bud Gussel had his business there. Bud Gussel preserved the letters, read them and eventually commissioned Goc to write the book about Bailey.
Goc said the voices format with people reading from letters and newspaper articles is used each May to open the McGowan House Museum, the Adams County Historical Society operates in Friendship. He invited the members of the Dells Country Historical Society and others attending the presentation to visit it.
This year, since it is the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, Goc said the presentation focuses on the Civil War. Tuesday night, the readers began with a proclamation from Wisconsin Gov. Alexander Randall vowing that Wisconsin would protect and defend the Union. Another read a poem from the Kilbourn Mirror of November 1860 that in which the author shouted for joy at the start of war.
From the county board minutes, readers read of the town of Grand Marsh asking that its name be changed to Lincoln.
From the Baraboo Republic of April 1861, the reader read that the country would no longer have Republicans or Democrats, but would "rally under the Stars and Stripes."
The Portage Register of the same month told of a patriot who left his wife to fight and state that "what is a patriot's wife to a patriot's country" - putting willingness to fight for the Union above family.
Another reader told of the call by Gov. Randall for women to donate blankets and quilts to the new soldiers since the Army had not yet supplied them.
Reporting on Bailey, the readers read an article in which he was quoted as asking the men he recruited for Company D of the 4th Wisconsin Infantry to enlist for three years instead of the 90 days for which they signed on. One man, the report called a patriot, encouraged the men to sign up for the duration of the war and all in the company did so.
