Close your eyes. What do you hear? Probably, like me at the time I am writing this, the indoor distractions of a busy life. Noise. We have filled up our lives with so much active clutter that we have forgotten how to enjoy nature. If we as adults struggle, how can we expect our children to learn?
When I was 7, my parents moved us from town into the country. Three and a half acres of woodland, grass, a pond, and a stream surrounded me. I remember thinking it looked like the most boring place in the world. However, I am so thankful, because these were the years I was forced to appreciate nature. It's where I learned from my mother and grandmother how to pay attention to clouds, birds, and how to plant a garden. It's where my dad taught me how to bait a hook and reel in a fish. My grandparents taught us that camping is not only survivable as a kid, but fun. I learned to respect it all and not take it for granted. I'm not talking about the abstract idea of saving the earth. Specifically, I learned to appreciate the sounds, sights, textures, smells, and tastes of the great outdoors.
There are times when I look at my three daughters, Addison, Harper, and Lucy, and panic because I'm afraid they are missing out on something precious. I'm scared that I haven't given them the gift of being able to enjoy a childhood like I had. The whole world around them beckons with smart phones, cartoons, computers, and handheld video games. One would think with all of this high-tech entertainment, we would never hear "I'm bored." The kids know they are missing something, but they think more of the same is what they need -- newer game systems, more friends around, and a brand-new mp3 player. I suggest that they need something money cannot buy. It's much quicker to buy our kids off with electronics, but what they really need is the same thing we gardeners seek outdoors - they need to be taught how to be entertained by discovering nature.
How important is it to revive the lost art of enjoying nature? Everyone talks about saving the earth, but few are enjoying the splendor of God's creation. It's filled with wonders that intrigue all of our senses, but we are too busy to notice. I garden because it reminds me of the mystery of life, and continues to amaze me. I garden because I want to feel in harmony with nature as I work with what's in my control ... and what isn't. When was the last time you were enchanted by something in nature?
