Blackbeard Fever Hits North Carolina After Anchor Raised

“Everybody loves the cannon and cannon balls, the weaponry,” Aubel says. “We have a couple of pieces of swords and pistols.  There are other smaller things that really tell you what life aboard the ship was like, everything from clothing items … to a piece of the window from the stern of the ship where the captain would have been. “ –  The state Maritime Museum in Southport reopens in July in a new riverside location near the spot where fate caught up with Bonnet, the “gentleman pirate” whom Blackbeard betrayed. Artifacts, replicas and interactive stations will underscore the differences between Hollywood’s myths and the real figures from the Golden Age of Piracy, which historians place between 1690 until 1730. – The exhibit opens to the public (10 a.m.– 4 p.m.)  with pirates, photo opportunities, an antique weapons presentation, and the museum’s nautical archeologists on hand to demonstrate conservation techniques. Captain Sinbad and the Meka II will be docked outside the Watercraft Center across from the museum. There are limited free tickets to sail out to the inlet within sight of where the Queen Anne’s Revenge sank in 1718. While Hollywood's brought Blackbeard to the silver screen in this summer's latest '"Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, the NC Maritime Museum at Beaufort will unveil 300 artifacts from the notorious pirate's actual ship found off North Carolina's Crystal Coast in its exhibit Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge opening June 11.  Photo by J.S.
