"I was lucky enough I got to see it in New York City," says Billy Boyd, who played the hobbit Pippin, in a phone call from his home in Scotland. "I was playing with my band on tour and we were in a few cities on the East Coast at the same time as the Radio City (Music Hall) gig was going on, so me and the rest of the boys in the band went to check it out."

Boyd says he wasn't sure what to expect of Lord of the Rings in Concert before arriving at the show. But what he found – and what fans who attend the Oct. 15 show at Honda Center will see – was the full movie with just the recorded score wiped out and live musicians filling the stage to replace all of composer Howard Shore's work.

"All the speaking's still there, all the sound effects, and it's just the music taken away and played by this incredible orchestra," Boyd says. "The sound is just amazing. You can still watch the film as the film, and sometimes be taken away by the movie. Then your eyes get taken away to the orchestra and you go, 'Oh, my God!'"

Unlike many films, where the background music might seem more an afterthought – "It's almost like taking a record and putting it on top of it," Boyd says – for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy the score helps create not just the mood of the film but its setting in a way, too, he says.

"We all sort of know that cliché of how important music is to movies," Boyd says. "But I felt like there was another level to it here. In New York I was able to spend some time with Howard and speak with him about his music. It's almost like he wrote a thousand years worth of music. Like he found a music library of Middle Earth: 'Oh, here's the music for the hobbit, and here's the music for the fellowship.' It's almost like he didn't write it.
