Spring Hill puts on hold a $3.5M sewer expansion needed for Festival Tennessee
SPRING HILL A proposed $3.5 million sewer expansion project needed for Festival Tennessee theme park got bumped back a few years by city leaders Monday.
The project was announced in March as a 1,500-acre commercial development east of Interstate 65 that would include a theme park, two resort hotels with 4,000 rooms each, 80 restaurants, a charter school, a sports complex and a shopping outlet.
No mention of Festival Tennessee came up during the discussion when Alderman Jonathan Duda offered the change, which was approved in an 8-1 vote.
Duda asked the project be bumped back to the 2013-2014 fiscal year, noting that it hadnt appeared on the five-year plan at all until Mayor Michael Dinwiddie included it the last fall.
I agree that we need to do it at some point, but I dont consider it among the highest priorities of this year, Duda said.
Theres been no word from Festival Tennessee developer Big International Group of Entertainment since April when the city Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted down a request for B4 zoning, the citys most open commercial use.
At that time, board members, including Dinwiddie, encouraged property owners to instead seek approval for the project as a commercial planned unit development, which requires more board scrutiny than B4 zoning.
On Tuesday, company CEO Dennis Peterson hung up before he could be asked about the sewer project.
Dinwiddie said bumping back the project limits the citys commercial growth.
I think it just delayed our economic development, he said. Its very valuable land.
You dont find interstate frontage property like that very often. I think its a massive economic mistake.
