Parma Hospital's 50th birthday party an event to remember: Rick Haase

The party had all the elements of a golden anniversary . . . and then some.

There were lots of guests — more than 500 turned out — lots of sentimental speeches, gold decorations, a big meal, and even a commemorative gift for guests to take home.

But this event did not feature a couple marking a wedding anniversary. Saturday’s celebration was all about commitment of a different kind: 50 years of commitment to community. And Parma Community General Hospital was at the heart of the fete.

The hospital opened its doors on August 2, 1961. A black-tie gala at Embassy Suites Rockside Road in Independence celebrated the history and tradition of service the hospital continues to provide to residents of Parma, Parma Heights, Seven Hills, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights and North Royalton, as the only remaining independent hospital in Cuyahoga County.

“I’m humbled by the number of people coming out tonight and by the scope of people,” said Parma Community General Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Terrence G. Deis .

Deis reflected on how the hospital has changed over the past half-century.

“The first hospital was built for $5.6 million. Our campus today is now over $200 million. But one of the things of which we’re most proud is that it still feels like home when you come to Parma Hospital,” said a smiling Deis, who greeted guests with his wife, Rosa .

A display of historical memorabilia was the first thing guests took notice of when entering the hotel atrium. Event co-chairs, retired President and CEO Patricia Ruflin and PCGH Community Liaison Mary Beth Talerico , did a masterful job of showcasing the colorful history of the hospital.

The planning committee included Deis; Peggy Farris ; Marcia Ferguson , who heads up the Parma Hospital Health Care Foundation; Christine George ; Marty Pytel ; Christine Rinto ; Andrea Sack ; C.J. Sheppard ; Toni Sidor and the hospital’s Director of Marketing Mark White . They spent more than 11 months working on the details for the event.

The 332-bed hospital is the second-largest employer in the city of Parma with more than 2,000 employees, more than 300 of whom have been with the institution for 20 years or more.
