Outdoors: Fishermen finding their fortunes might be brighter at night

Many striper fishermen surrender when heat turns bass nocturnal. When fish change behavior and location, anglers need to follow suit. Fish are present and catchable now if we’re patient, willing to move, and try different strategies, especially going nocturnal, too.

Sleep deprivation, fumbling in the dark, excessive coffee stimulation, GPS dependence, and navigational risks dissuade many from launching into the night. Rocks, reefs, and even lobster pot lines can prove hazardous nightmares. But for a very serious few, the lure of more big fish and fewer boaters to compete with is irresistible. For the real night angler, the darker the better.

If there’s going to be a bright moon, they’ll fish before it’s up too high. Better yet, if they have the option, they’ll fish during the new moon, when it’s darkest. Drifting eels at those times regularly produces big bass. The recent 58-pounder off Block Island and 53-pounder from Cape Cod Bay should encourage us all.

For daylight fishermen with big, fast boats capable of navigating potentially treacherous seas, now is the time to cruise far offshore to the canyons for yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, and swordfish, where vast solitude and the promise of 100-plus-pound fish prevail.

Far from solitude, my son had to quit striper fishing outside Barnstable Harbor last week to tow back to the dock another out-of-gas boater and his passenger who waved him down. This oft-repeated story of poor preparation and incompetence had a happy ending thanks to the presence of a fisherman with a well-maintained craft and a willingness to help.

Cod fishermen are occasionally taking fish with white, green or orange tags. They can help cod management for the benefit of us all by recording and reporting data on these fish. Fish with green tags on their bellies should be released, as they have acoustic tags that can continue to provide information on cod movements, especially around spawning grounds. The secret life of sharks
A magnificent 538-pound thresher shark was caught off our coast last weekend in the Monster Shark Tournament, but great whites get most of the attention. State shark biologists have tracked four great white sharks that they tagged off Chatham last year. One traveled regularly between Monomoy and the Chatham Inlet for three months, until Nov.
