PALGN Staff E3 2011 Reflections - Part 1

Just a few short weeks ago, we all took a peek into the wishing fountain to lay out our hopes and dreams for this year’s E3. The Electronic Entertainment Expo is now officially done and dusted for 2011. The one week of the year that we all look forward to went quicker than Superman on red cordial. If nothing else, the latest E3 was certainly one to remember, for both the right and wrong reasons. With lengthy press conferences held by the big three console manufactures and days worth of demonstrations for all of the major upcoming releases, the folks at PALGN have been kept very busy. After a week of reporting all the news and giving our hands-on impressions of all the big games, we can finally take stock, and reflect on everything then happened at E3 2011. Reactions among the viewing audience were rather strong. Core gamers combusted as Microsoft announced Kinect after Kinect project, some snoozed during Sony’s conference, and countless watchers wondered why Nintendo decided to named their new console after the sound of a police siren. Just as the community has their opinions, being on the front line exposed all of the PALGN writers to both the best and the worst of the annual video game conference. It's well known that I dislike Nintendo for what they haven't done, i.e. making a console designed for genuine games as opposed to gimmicks. Damn, even a console that plays movies would be an improvement. But no, the Wii-U was revealed and share values dropped (hit up Google if you don't believe me). After foolishly purchasing the 3DS, which has left me feeling underwhelmed, I shouldn't have expected anything better than a hilariously named console. The whole announcement was a joke. Finally, Sony's press conference was slightly less uninspiring. The PlayStation Vita will be the best handheld ever, you can hold me to that. It blows Nintendo's 3DS out of the water, and with great pricing, I can't see how it's going to fail. It's exactly what I want from portable gaming; no more headaches and (fingers crossed) no more dodgy ports. As for the PlayStation 3, well, it could be finished after Honestly, I'm over how this industry is moving forward and I don't care if I sound like a grumpy, bitter old man holding a grudge...because I am. E3 2011 confirmed that money is more important than quality, and since only a small portion of developers are remaining true to themselves, I'm not sure what's going to happen in the years ahead. Frankly, I'm a little scared.

SF Signal: Superbowl Movie Trailer Grudge Match

This past Sunday was Superbowl Sunday in the States with the Pittsburgh Steelers squaring off against the Green Bay Packers in a little game of American football. This is a day of the big game, big parties and big ratings for TV. But in the last several years, something else has been gaining in popularity on this same day: TV commercials. That's right, many advertisers blow a huge chunk of cash and creative capital on Superbowl ads, trying to woo viewers to buy their stuff. Some people even watch the Superbowl just for the ads. We call these people 'crazy'.

What I noticed this year was the seemingly high number of genre movie related trailers on display during the game. In the gladiatorial tradition best exemplified by the game on the gridiron, let's look at the trailers aired and crown a champion as 'The Best Superbowl Movie Trailer'.

Your choices are:

before becoming a heartwarming family drama. Mostly because dinosaurs like their hearts warm, I don't know why. One question: If you're going back into the past to 'start over', why the hell are you going back to a time that is rife with predators who are bigger, faster and meaner than you? You're going to run out of bullets at some point. Seriously, isn't there a time period that is a little less dinosaur intensive? That said, I'll still tune in to see how it is.

I've heard a lot of smack about the Captain America trailer versus the Thor trailer. For my money, the Captain America trailer looks terrific while Thor looks, how shall I put it, so corny that I want to puke quite a bit in my own mouth. It's like Clash of the Titans meets action movie starring this weeks champion in professional wrestling. "Meet Manly Hunkman. When he's not being manly, he's a hunk but now he's (tire screech efx) a god?!?

Battle:LA and Super 8 look most interesting to me.  Maybe because they are rather vague on the details.  Now the Transformers movie looks just like the last two, and yes, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks stunning, but my ears are still ringing from the first one, so I will probably pass on that one.

Terra Nova looks interesting, but I can't stop wondering what blithering idiot would be smart enough to invent time travel, and then stupid enough to go back to the days of huge and hungry dinosaurs.  Don't they know there is a big ass asteroid heading their way?  Geez!
