Shrinersfest to tune in to local tastes
Somewhere in Jamaica, someone who has never heard of Evansville could be wearing a Pits T-shirt that George Barnett gave Paul McCartney while on vacation.
"I told him that we use the Beatles font, and he said, 'What's the Beatles font?'" Barnett said. "So I said 'I'll bring you a shirt.' My wife says it's going to show up on someone mowing the lawn in a couple weeks there. But who cares, it's publicity."
Local band The Pits, one of the bands performing at the Shrinersfest this weekend, has been playing together for the past 28 years.
"We were just going to play a single gig out at the stripper pits," said Barnett, the band's drummer and general manager. "I said, 'Well, we ought to just call ourselves The Pits.' And it stuck."
After the 'stripper pits' concert in an abandoned coal mine area of Warrick County, The Pits took their show to the road. The group since has performed at wedding receptions, bars and other locations around Indiana and neighboring states.
On Friday, they will play at the Walnut Street Bierstube for Shrinersfest, one of four local bands performing at the festival.
The four members of the Pits — Barnett, Jon Hyneman, Gene Baker and Ray Prichett — do not view the band as a hobby or a career, but somewhere in between.
Barnett, a lawyer, said the band can play a gig over the weekend and be back at work by Monday.
"Gene, on guitar, he's in sales. Ray's an IT guy, and Jon is actually a musician," Barnett said.
The band performs mostly covers and mash-ups, but Barnett said they have a few original songs in the works.
"So far Gene and I have written most of the songs," Barnett said. "We write them based on whatever happens to inspire you lyrically."
When the band first started, Barnett said, the audience was almost a specific age group.
"It's morphed," he said. "Now it's a lot of 20-somethings, 30-somethings all the way up to 50- and 60-somethings."
The crowd varies in age due to the wide range of covers the band plays, from '60s Steppenwolf to '90s Red Hot Chili Peppers. And no matter how old, everyone has something to keep moving to.
"We do a song like Kid Rock's 'All Summer Long,' and we start with 'Werewolves of London,' then throw in some 'Sweet Home Alabama' because it's all the same chords," Barnett said. "And Gene will put on a werewolf mask."
When they first started, The Pits pulled off riskier ways of entertaining the audience.
