Get 'all the Polish goodies' at Reflections
Tucked along the waters of Deep Lake in Lake Villa is Reflections restaurant, a magnificent wood-and-brick structure that draws people back time and again. And for good reason: Besides the location, the place offers a variety of fish and seafood, as well as authentic Polish dishes.
“We’ve been going there since 2001,” said Don Ulias of Antioch. It’s not unusual for Ulias and his wife, Judy, to dine there three times a week.
“We go there because it is the friendliest place with the nicest people. And the food is outstanding,” Ulias said. “I love the fish fry, but if you want, they will make you a fish sandwich, too.”
The sweets are well worth it, he said: “If you haven’t tried the chocolate raspberry cake, you really have to.”
The desserts, as well as most of the items on the menu, are homemade, said Anna Krupka, who has owned the business with her husband, Jack, since 1999.
The Polish immigrants worked hard to turn a defunct resort dating from the 1920s into the restaurant it is today.
Anna Krupka said their workers reflect well on the business.
“My chef, Flumencio Escobar, has been with us since Day One,” she said.
“There are Polish delis, but as far as Polish restaurants, there aren’t too many,” she said. “We have sausage, kraut, duck, stuffed cabbage — all the Polish goodies.”
On Fridays, the restaurant boasts a number of other items such as Norwegian cod that can be ordered fried or broiled. The same goes for the lake perch. The fish fry is served with choice of potato, vegetable and homemade cole slaw. “We do not use mayonnaise in our cole slaw, so it’s fresh and crisp,” Anna Krupka said.
Robert and Joan Snyder of Lake Villa come here twice a week — always for the fish fry. She usually orders the cod, sometimes the walleye.
“They have a nice bar and we’ll sit and have a cocktail before dinner,” Robert Snyder said. “There’s also a nice sitting area with a fireplace. The service is excellent and it’s so hospitable. It’s just kind of classy for this area without being a chain-type restaurant.”
When Carol Winkler of Lindenhurst is visiting her daughter in South Carolina, her husband, Don, will often dine at the restaurant, ordering one of his favorite dishes, pork shank with sauerkraut. “It’s cooked the way it should be,” she said. “I think the pierogi are wonderful, too.
