75th Augusta Rodeo
Augusta celebrates the 75th anniversary of its American Legion PRCA Rodeo this weekend with pies, paintings, pottery, poetry and a parade.
The party starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a parade through Augusta, followed by a poetry and pie contest and tasting and evening slack at the rodeo grounds. The official rodeo is Sunday afternoon.
Saturday evening's slack features more than 100 entries in saddle bronc, team and tie down roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing.
Announcing this year's rodeo is Steve Kenyon, who also announced the Belt rodeo last weekend. Kesler Championship Rodeo of Helena and MaGrath, Alberta, provides the stock.
Ben Arps, rodeo organizer and chairman of Augusta's rodeo, said in commemoration of the 75th anniversary they will give each event winner belt buckles from Montana Silversmiths.
Reserved tickets to Sunday's rodeo are $15, general admission tickets are $10 and children's admission is $5.
Miss Rodeo Montana Lorissa Harris will sign autographs at Latigo and Lace in Augusta at 11 a.m.
The theme for Saturday's parade is "A Step Back in Time." Parade organizer Jordan Tallion said they will honor some special guests this weekend.
"(The parade) is being dedicated to the men and women with the American Legion and Auxiliary," Tallion said. "The honorary parade marshals are Fred and Phyllis Scherrer."
Tallion said the parade is unique each year.
"It'll have several floats, and the Shriners' little cars will be here, but it's always a surprise because everyone shows up at the last minute," Tallion said. "We may have wagons, horses, buggies, it could be anything. I'm sure we'll have a lot of old cars."
The Augusta Public Library's float will feature Marie Antoinette along with her 7-year-old lady in waiting and a guillotine with "Let Them Eat Pie" written above it. Kristin Mullen of Helena portrays Antoinette and Allison Lane from Missoula will be the lady-in-waiting.
Following the parade at 2:30 p.m., the Augusta Public Library holds a new event, "Readin' and Eatin' Poetry and Pies," at the Augusta senior center.
Poets John Ulberg and Kerry Bouchard will read some of their writing.
Event director Susan Geise said Ulberg's poems appeal to those interested in the cowboy way of life. Bouchard will tell a tale handed down through her family.
"Kerry is reading a poem passed down through her family for a long time," Geise said. "She'll tell a great, great story about a horse and a real sick little kid. I think it's a riding-through-the-night-to-save-a-sick-kid's-life-type tale. I've heard it, and it's a great story.
