Flea markets offer bargain-hunting adventures

For a bargain hunter in Orangeburg, there is no finer way to spend a hot summer day than taking a long stroll down the crowded lanes of a flea market. Most area flea markets operate every weekend under covered shelter and outside in good weather, bringing together hundreds of local vendors and a few intrepid amateurs who want to empty out their attics, closets, garages and storerooms.

One can find anything and everything from collectible china and glasswear to "Elvis on velvet" paintings, used and new clothing, a variety of concessions, knives, firearms, chickens, goats, rabbits, hunting dogs, "clear the shelves" packaged foods and fresh produce. For some browsers, much of what they find may be junk and trash, but to others it's treasure. For the frugal, the curious, the collector or the reseller, the flea market is unarguably a popular weekend destination.

Actually, if one started out early on a Saturday morning, one could complete the Orangeburg-Neeses-Springfield flea market circuit and be back in the comfort of one's air-conditioned home watching TV and relaxing in the recliner by 3 p.m.

But be sure to browse the Springfield market first. The vendors usually begin vacating fairly early after noon. Neeses, on the other hand, usually doesn't get into full swing until 10 or 11 a.m., and the Orangeburg market often stays active until as late as 4 p.m. Hint: wear good walking shoes, light-colored clothing and a hat since many of the vendors rent outdoor tables.

No one knows for sure how the term "flea market" came to be, but there are three popular ideas regarding where the term originated. In France, the "Marche Aux Puces" market, Paris's most famous flea market, a grouping of more than a dozen flea markets, earned its name for the flea-infested goods it was rumored to have sold. Another idea was when the slums and alleys of Paris were demolished and replaced by new construction, dealers in second-hand goods were forced to flee. Some associate the term with New York City's 18th-century Fly Market. The Dutch named it the market Vlie, which means "valley," but is pronounced "flea."

There are several commercial flea markets in the Orangeburg area, and one can spot the small garage sales, yard sales and swap meets that sporadically pop up at homes and in private garages, parking lots and vacant lots throughout the region. But by far, the most popular are the Springfield Flea Market, Giant Flea Market and Orangeburg Flea Market.
