Fiber festival June 11 and 12 in Bouckville
Bouckville, NY -- CNY Fiber Artists & Producers is holding its first annual "Showcase - from Animals to Art" June 11 and 12 in Bouckville.
The event wll include fiber animals, fiber vendors and demonstrations with an emphasis on education. The children's tent will be full of activities designed to give children a taste for weaving and felting and some sense of different fibers and fiber processing.
There will be animal tours, shearing demonstrations and other informal demonstrations throughout the day. On Sunday, the Oneida County 4-H club will be holding a dog show.
There also will be a series of workshops for sheep and goat farmers and for those interested in fibers.
They are:
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday -- Rug Braiding with Heather Lathrop of Dreamweaver Creations. Cost $30. Students will learn the techniques of rug braiding from roving while working on a coaster-sized project. The same techniques would be used to make a full-sized shepherd’s rug. The class is open to adults and teenagers, and no experience is required. Materials will be provided. Students will make a nuno-felted scarf (wool felted through silk gauze). The class is open to adults and teenagers, and no felting experience is required. Students should call Denise at 607-642-5568 when they register so that she can dye the wool and silk according to their color preferences.
2 to 4 p.m. Saturday -- FAMACHA with Dr. Tatiana Stanton of Cornell University. Cost $25. Internal parasites, especially gastro-intestinal worms, are the number one health problem affecting sheep and goats in much of the United States. Because worms have become resistant to many of the dewormers producers use, a more integrated approach to internal parasite control is necessary. This workshop is designed to help sheep and goat farmers develop integrated parasite management programs for their farms and flocks. Students will learn to use tools such as FAMACHA to monitor worm loads. The FAMACHA system measures levels of anemia in the animals so treatment decisions can be made according to the needs of individual animals in the herd. Adults and teenagers may register and need only to provide pen and paper. Students will receive a FAMACHA eye chart.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday -- Beginning Spinning with Amy Cook of Sweetland Hill Finnsheep. Cost $30. Teenagers and adults who are new to spinning are welcome to register for this class, in which they will learn how to prepare raw fiber for spinning and how to use a drop spindle and spinning wheel. Each student will receive a drop spindle to take home. Wool roving will also be provided.
