Introduction
Victimology is a branch of science that deals with the study of victimization, including the relationships between victims and offenders, the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system. In more simple words one can define the study of victims is known as Victimology. The study also includes role of police and courts in the victimization process, and also the connections between victims and other societal groups and institutions, such as the media, businesses, and social movements.

As a professional career (after the completion of the program) it is a bit challenging but very much rewarding. The course will prepare professionals to manage disaster such as tsunami and also equip the participants with skills of crisis intervention. The course will also be a collaborative effort of the various wings of the criminal justice systems and different department. And, hence, will be an innovative effort at teaching, fostering an interdisciplinary approach. As a latest edition to the profession, Victimology will definitely create opportunities for those who dare to work for the victims and as a whole for the society.


Courses & Eligibility
There are both full time and part-time programmes in Victimology available for students, sponsored candidates from industry, agencies, organisations or NGOs, government departments such as police and judiciary, counsellors and social workers and to faculty dealing with students’ issues in educational institutions.

Those with an undergraduate degree in any subject are eligible for the two-year postgraduate programme. Those with a postgraduate degree in the related field or work experience with an NGO are eligible for the six-month diploma programme.

The certificate course offered by few universities/institutes is open only for criminal justice professionals.

The programme will adequately educate and train members of police, judiciary, medical and social welfare institutions and other front like professionals and para-professionals working with victims about the basic concepts of victimology and victim assistance.


Job Prospects
The course is designed to empower criminal justice professionals working with the system, dealing with the victims and sensitise them.

An important object to the criminal justice system is to ensure justice to the victims, yet he/she is not given any substantial right, not even to participate in the criminal proceedings. To achieve this goal, training and education in victimology by trained professionals to the criminal justice professional will help.

The course we offered by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is world-class in terms of curriculum and quality. It is sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under ‘Teaching and research in emerging areas’ and will be in line with the United Nations Declaration of the Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of crime and abuse of Power 1985.

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the need for victim assistance, role of victimology in prevention of crime, history and role of the victim in society, describe ways victims assistance programmes help the victim and also learn how to develop programmes to help victims.

The pass outs can find get employments in the private field of Criminal Justice such as Security Management, Private Detective and Non-governmental organizations. They can also work under government agencies for various projects. The positions available for these qualified professionals are: Assistant Security Managers (Trainees) in security organizations, Investigators in private detective agencies and Counselors and Field Officers NGOs. One can adopt teaching in various educational institutions or can also start his/her own venture to help the society to overcome victimization.
